Most of the iron in the body is utilized for producing hemoglobin molecules which are a part of red blood cells, and transport oxygen to the various tissues present in the body. So iron is an essential mineral to maintain a good health. |
The deficiency of iron however may lead to breathing problems, a bad performance, unusual fatigue, poor memory and a risk to catch any infection. The deficiency for iron build up steadily and usually results from iron imbalance due to lack of a proper nutritional diet. A considerable iron deficiency may show the way for anemia. Tiredness and weakness are the most familiar indications of anemia. This deficiency can also pave the way for the malfunctioning of abundant organ systems.
One can increase the quantity of iron or can make for the deficiency of iron by consuming iron supplements available in the market. It can also be compensated by swallowing food stuff affluent with iron content such as red meat and green leafy vegetables. Food usually comprises of two kinds of iron. These are Nonheme iron and Heme iron. Plant foods like beans and lentils contain iron known as Nonheme.
Whereas, the iron found in animal food is called heme iron. These foods include fish, red meat and poultry. It is easy to absorb nonheme iron when it is taken with vitamin C and animal protein. On the other hand, Heme iron is better absorbed when taken with nonheme iron.
The most familiar form of iron supplement is Ferrous sulfate. Some other forms are ferrous glutamate, ferrous glycine, ferrous fumarate, ferrous succinate, ferrous gluconate and ferrous lactate. However, these may have certain side-effects that include epigastric abdominal problem, obstipation and diarrhea. But, these side-effects can be reduced if these supplements are consumed after the meal.
